Can My Teen Get Car Insurance Discounts?

Insurance for teen drivers is notoriously expensive. Insurance agencies typically push up the price for teen drivers due to the fact that the agency faces more risk by insuring a new, young driver. Unfortunately, that means high premiums for you.

This doesn’t mean you’re out of luck, however.

Often, teen drivers will qualify for auto policy discounts on their own policy. Or, if you don’t want to take that route, then adding the teen to your policy might also help.

Discounts for Young Drivers

Car insurance discounts don’t only exist for the drivers with the lowest risks. They also help drivers who are the most responsible. Teens might have high driving risks, but that doesn’t necessarily make them unreliable.

  • Drivers can get payment discounts based on how they structure their policy payments. For example, if your teen can pay their entire policy premium in a lump sum, the insurer might offer them a rate drop.

  • If you set up the teen’s policy to automatically renew, then you might also save.

  • Encouraging your teen to maintain good grades might qualify them for discounts. Good student discounts can apply to students who can prove they have good grades.

  • Enroll your teen in a safe driving course. It can teach them significant defensive driving skills. Those, in turn, can help them become less risky behind the wheel.

Other Savings Options

Discounts are not the only way you might be able to save on your teen driver’s coverage. There are other options. However, talk to your insurer before taking these steps.

  • Consider increasing the deductibles on the policy. By raising the deductible, you shoulder more of the cost of a claim and take risk away from the insurer. However, only raise your deductible if you can afford to pay more in the event of a claim.

  • You might decide to add your teen and their vehicle onto your own car insurance. This is a multi-car policy. If the vehicles can benefit from similar coverage limits, you might be able to only pay one premium for insurance on two cars. Your premium might rise. However, it often won’t cost as much as two separate policies.

  • Add your teen to your existing auto policy as an additional insured driver. Therefore, they will have coverage if they drive your car or their own.

Call your insurance agent and ask them what is the best course of action to insure your teen. Sometimes, the teen might need their own policy. In others, they can share yours. Regardless, they will likely qualify for cost saving incentives on their own.
